San Francisco Advocates for Ceasefire Protest at Rep Nancy Pelosi’s House
SAN FRANCISCO – Nancy Pelosi's San Francisco constituents will gather for a family-friendly CODEPINK rally at her house on Sunday morning to discuss their Congress member's lack of support for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, and their opposition to her continued funding of lethal weapons to Israel.
When: Sunday, January 14, 10-12 Noon
Where: 2640 Broadway, San Francisco (Pacific Heights)
"With 70% of Americans, and 80% of Democrats in favor of a ceasefire, it is extremely puzzling and distressing for Pelosi to stubbornly refuse to hear the voters' voices. I know that many are considering whether Pelosi and other Democrat candidates support a ceasefire as their litmus test for voting in November" said rally organizer Cynthia Papermaster, an organizer with CODEPINK S.F. Bay Area, the women-led anti-militarism activist group.
Susan Witka, a Pelosi San Francisco constituent, points out that "Pelosi, who is a devout Catholic, really needs to heed the words of Pope Francis who recently said "I implore you to stop. In the name of God, ceasefire."
"Pelosi, who is incommunicado with her constituents-- I mean she doesn't hold town meetings like other Representatives, nor is she ever in her office or have meetings with constituents. Her aides don't return phone calls or acknowledge emails" added Witka.
Israel is currently being charged with genocide in the United Nations International Court of Justice by the nation of South Africa, with a more dozen countries supporting the case. A ruling on the genocide charge and a decision in favor of South Africa's request for an immediate end to Israel's military operations in Gaza is expected within an week. The ruling will be a temporary measure pending a full decision on the genocide charge from the ICJ.
San Francisco, a city in need of affordable housing, healthcare, living wages, clean energy, free college education, and peace, seeks alternatives to perpetual war endorsed and financed by Pelosi.
San Francisco passed a ceasefire resolution this week, underscoring the community's support for a ceasefire and the indifference Rep. Pelosi is showing to her constituents.
The rally, from 10 am-noon, is a family-friendly and peaceful gathering. "We love it when people bring their children and dogs", continued Papermaster. "We'll have hot coffee and snacks, poetry, music, dancing, sidewalk chalking, and constituents are invited to make statements concerning the situation in Gaza to their Congress representative The rally is also demanding an end to Nancy Pelosi's funding of more lethal weapons to Israel and her backing for President Biden's skirting of Congressional approval to spend billions more of taxpayer dollars for the weapons.
Following the demonstration at Pelosi's residence, thousands will convene for a 1 pm Gaza Solidarity Rally and March at San Francisco Civic Center. This march is in solidarity with the American Muslim Task Force for Palestine's March in Washington, DC, on 1/13.
