CODEPINK Detroit to Hold a Public Teach-In: Iran - the Most Misunderstood and Demonized Country
DETROIT – CODEPINK Detroit will hold a free public teach-in on Iran titled 'Iran - the Most Misunderstood and Demonized Country,' presented by Ismail Noor. The event aims to highlight Iran's history as a Nation and put the current war in historical context. It also aims to help participants understand the circumstances behind the ongoing American-Iranian conflict.
- When: October 8, 2026, from 5:00 PM- 7:00 PM
- Where: General Baker Institute, 15798 Livernois Ave, Detroit, MI 48238
"Iran is constantly in the news, and it can be overwhelming to understand what's really happening beyond the headlines. This teach-in creates a space for people at any level of understanding to learn Iran's history, put the current war and ongoing U.S.-Iranian conflict into historical context, and leave with a deeper understanding of what we're seeing in the news," explained CODEPINK Detroit organizer Jackie Barlow.
About the presenter: Ismail Noor, born in Palestine in 1949. He was forced into exile at the age of 17 after the 1967 invasion of the West Bank and embarked on a refugee's journey before settling in Michigan in 1977. Dr. Noor earned his PhD in Sociology from Michigan State University and worked for the Children's Trust Fund, which prevents child abuse and neglect, for 15 years. Throughout his academic and professional career, Ismail has been an active student, community member, and advocate for human rights and justice for Palestine. As a student, he helped establish and serve on the boards of the General Union of Palestinian Students (GUPS) in 1981 and the Greater Lansing Arab American Social Services (GLAASS) in the 1990s. Today, he is active in his local BAKBA Survivors Association, Moratorium Now, Michigan Coalition Against Genocide (MICAG), and the United States Palestinian Community Networks (USPCN) chapter. He aims to support local community actions and activists in their fight for social justice, against genocide, engineered starvation, ICE, and war.
The presentation will be followed by community discussion and a question-and-answer portion.
