CODEPINK Michigan Drops “Feminists Say No to War’ Banner, Police Confiscate Banner As “Evidence”
Detroit, Michigan – The Michigan chapter of CODEPINK made a powerful statement on Saturday morning by unveiling a large banner over the Washington and Jefferson overpass. A big bold banner that read "Feminists Say No to War," was hung in solidarity with demands for a ceasefire and an end to Israel's genocide in Gaza.
The banner remained visible for approximately 10 minutes amidst cheers and honks of support before an "army" of police officers intervened, confiscating the banner. They refused to return the banner, citing it as "evidence."
“The only evidence those in power need to grasp right now is the very straightforward evidence of the genocide happening in Gaza by Israel with the funding and support of the US government. The majority of America, the majority of Detroit, does not support this genocide.” said CODEPINK organizer ‘Osk
Today’s banner drop was part of CODEPINK's nationwide International Women's Day campaign designed to unite women's struggles at home and in Palestine by centering reproductive justice internationally.
The organization aims to highlight the contradiction of elected officials claiming to support women's rights while using U.S. taxpayer’s money to fund the murder of women and children in Palestine and the destruction of their access to an adequate natal and prenatal healthcare system. Since the start of Israel’s genocide campaign, miscarriages in Gaza have gone up 300%. Women are forced to undergo C-sections without anesthesia. Israeli soldiers in the Tal al Zaatar area of Gaza shot at and bulldozed over pregnant women carrying white flags.
CODEPINK Michigan reiterates its commitment to peaceful protest and stands resolute in its demand for justice and accountability on behalf of Palestine.
