CODEPINK Detroit to Host Back-to-School Supply Drive While Families Struggle to Afford School Year Needs
DETROIT – CODEPINK Detroit will host a back-to-school supply drive on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Eastern Market, coinciding with the anti-genocide rally organized by the Michigan Coalition Against Genocide and Jewish Voice for Peace Detroit.
The event aims to collect essential school supplies for families in need, with donations directed to Oakland CAFE, an organization supporting immigrant families in the metro Detroit area, particularly in Pontiac. Organizers are requesting commonly used school supplies.
"We at CODEPINK Detroit are passionate about uplifting each other and our communities," said Stewart Mitchell, an organizer with CODEPINK Detroit. "We believe that every child deserves access to education and the supplies they need to learn. As we see increasing funds dedicated to war rather than housing, education, and community enrichment, we need each other's support more than ever. With the 2026-2027 school year approaching, help us support families in and around Detroit with essential supplies."
Recent analyses highlight the financial strain on families preparing for the upcoming school year. A report from Groundwork Collaborative and The Century Foundation indicates that the 2026–27 school year will cost families close to $4,000 per child, a 10.7% increase from the previous year. The report also notes that nearly half of parents plan to take on debt to afford back-to-school shopping.
