Peace Activists Will “Jail” War Criminals as Thousands Surround White House
WASHINGTON, D.C. – CODEPINK plans to lock up war criminals, Joe Biden and Benjamin Netanyahu, on Saturday at the Surround The White House Red Line protest outside the White House.
CODEPINK activists will put figures of President Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu in a jail cell in Lafayette Square, across from the White House. As the International Criminal Court (ICC) pursues a warrant for Netanyahu’s arrest and President Biden supplies the weapons which his government is using to commit the atrocities in question, the group is demanding accountability and an end to U.S. complicity in Israel’s genocide in Gaza.
Action Details:
- Date: June 8, 2024
- Time: 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM (CDT)
- Location: The White House
After the ICC prosecutor announced his charges against Netanyahu and the head of the Israeli military, Yoav Gallant, numerous members of Congress immediately issued public threats against court officials and their family members, saying “Target Israel, and we will target you.”This type of rhetoric is alarming.
By seeking to influence the operations of the court, these officials may find themselves in violation of Section 112 of Title 18 of the U.S. Code, which protects foreign officials and internationally protected persons against intimidation, coercion, and obstruction relating to their duties.
Speaking in Congress on Friday about the 42 Democrats in Congress who joined House Republicans in pushing forward sanctions against the ICC, CODEPINK co-founder Medea Benjamin said “that they took that vote and they are calling on the US to freeze the bank accounts, to deny visas to the US, not only for members of the court, but for their families, is something that really is more reminiscent of the Mafia than the US Congress.”
CODEPINK joins the movement for Palestinian liberation in stepping up where the administration has failed. On June 8, people all over the country will encircle the White House to show solidarity with Palestine. Wearing red, protesters aim to embody the red line that President Biden has not upheld.
