Dear friend,
The vibe is 'You can fire wherever you want. You have to get permission, but there will be permission. It's only bureaucratic.'" — Michael, IOF* soldier in Gaza during Israel’s current genocide campaign.
This bone-chilling quote is a direct testimony of what we already knew — Netanyahu has given the green light for Israeli forces to wage war on all of Gaza — just as the forces were given the order to kill their own citizens on October 7. It is now widely reported that Israel issued a “Hannibal Directive” that day, resulting in countless fatalities they originally attributed to Hamas.Â
Despite these now well-known undeniable facts, Netanyahu is being welcomed to Congress with open arms on July 24. We need every elected official with a backbone to stand up to this wildly inappropriate visit by boycotting Netanyahu’s address to Congress!

This genocidal attitude is a representation of how the army of a settler-colonial state operates, and we’ve witnessed it with our own eyes for over 9 months now. Netanyahu’s US-backed crimes in Gaza are countless; so countless that The Lancet medical journal has released research estimating the overall death toll in Gaza when also considering indirect deaths will likely exceed 186,000. 186,000! Forty thousand are already dead and tens of thousands are missing, including children. There are ZERO fully functioning hospitals because they have all been bombed or raided by the Israeli military. NO ONE has safe and reliable access to food, water, or shelter. Keeping up with Netanyahu’s growing list of war crimes feels like an impossible task at this point. He should be arrested upon entry to the U.S., not given a platform to spew his lies to Congress!

Perhaps the worst of Netanyahu's army’s depravity happens in Israeli prisons, which are essentially torture centers for Palestinians kidnapped by the IOF. Recently, the Director of al-Shifa Hospital, Muhammad Abu Salmiya, freed after 7 months in captivity, recounted “daily physical and psychological humiliation” and “almost daily torture,” including beatings with dogs and batons. At least 40 Palestinians have been murdered while in Israeli custody since October 7, some killed in interrogation cells. Despite Abu Salmiya being detained and tortured, a clear charge was never brought against him. Netanyahu vigorously enforces this violent culture as part of Israel’s settler-colonialism policy, and he’s going to justify his genocidal ideologies to the U.S. Congress if we don’t do something about it!Â

I know this is all very gruesome to read but we need to understand the extent of what the U.S. is cheering on. Of course, both settler-colonial states are partners in this genocide, so it’s unsurprising that the U.S. government wants to normalize a war criminal like Netanyahu by inviting him to address Congress — a majority of them are war criminals themselves. Still, somehow, seeing this en masse support for genocide is maddening. It’s the height of depravity to welcome a war criminal. This is a point in history where everyone — elected official or not — needs to make a decision whether to relentlessly oppose this genocide or complacently support it.Â

*IOF stands for Israeli Occupation Forces, a popular correction to the Israeli army’s chosen name “IDF,” or “Israeli Defense Forces,” since the army does not defend anything, rather it protects Israel’s violent, settler-colonial regime.Â
