Santa Monica Passes Ceasefire Resolution After Long Night of Public Comments
SANTA MONICA – Late last night Santa Monica City Council passed a Ceasefire Resolution joining a long line of cites across the country demanding an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza.
The resolution was originally drafted by Justice4Palestine-LA and endorsed by CODEPINK, Jewish Voice for Peace, Westside4Palestine, Council on American-Islamic Relations, Interfaith Communities United for Peace and Justice, and IfNotNow.
The original demands of the petition for a ceasefire included: a end to the genocide in Gaza, an Immediate, permanent, binding ceasefire, the release of all Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners, adherence to international law, the renewal of funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), an immediate cessation of military assistance until a permanent ceasefire is enacted and Israel abides by applicable U.S. law governing its use, and called for the city of Santa Monica identify and support local programs that combat antisemitism, Islamophobia, racism, homophobic and xenophobic attacks.
The ceasefire resolution passed on Tuesday included the much-needed call for a ceasefire.
“In the midst of a genocide the least a city can do is call for a ceasefire. We should all be outraged but instead too many are ignoring the full scale murder of innocent Palestinians. We are thrilled with this step by the Santa Monica City Council.” said CODEPINK co-founder and organizer Jodie Evans.
The successful campaign for a ceasefire resolution represents a united front against violence and injustice. It is reflective of the majority of Americans who want to see an end to genocide in Gaza.
