Community Members to Push for a Ceasefire Resolution at Santa Monica City Council Meeting
SANTA MONICA, CA - Tonight, local community organizations and concerned neighbors will gather at the Santa Monica City Council Meeting to demand urgent action for a ceasefire resolution. They are calling on the city council to pass a ceasefire resolution in solidarity with the growing global movement advocating for an end to the U.S. backed genocide in Gaza.
In light of the ongoing genocide and humanitarian crisis, a petition has been initiated urging the Santa Monica City Council to take a stand for peace. With over 100 cities across the nation, including several in California, having already passed similar resolutions, the petitioners emphasize the critical need for Santa Monica to join this chorus of voices calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire.
The petition outlines the following demands:
- An end to the genocide in Gaza
- An Immediate, permanent, binding ceasefire
- The release of all Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners
- Adherence to international law
- The renewal of funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA)
- An immediate cessation of military assistance until a permanent ceasefire is enacted and Israel abides by applicable U.S. law governing its use
- The city of Santa Monica identify and support local programs that combat antisemitism, Islamophobia, racism, homophobic and xenophobic attacks
Drafted by Justice4Palestine-LA and endorsed by organizations including Jewish Voice for Peace, Westside4Palestine, Council on American-Islamic Relations, Interfaith Communities United for Peace and Justice, IfNotNow, and CODEPINK, the petition represents a united front against violence and injustice.
At tonight's city council meeting, CODEPINK activists Ghassan Khoury, from Palestine, and Susan Adelman, who has firsthand experience from a trip to Gaza in 2009, will provide testimony. The community is urged to show their support by packing the city council chambers and standing in solidarity with those affected by conflict.
