CODEPINK Joins Call-In Campaign to Free Cuba

March 13, 2023

CODEPINK Joins National Call-In Days to Remove Cuba from State Sponsors of Terrorism List

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: CODEPINK along with Massachusetts Peace Action, Democratic Socialists of America, the Latin America Working Group, the Chicago Religious Leadership Network, and others calls  for a National Call-In to the White House to Remove Cuba from the List of State Sponsors of Terrorism. The call-in will occur on March 15th and 16th from 11 am to 3 pm EST.

The coalition of groups calls on President Biden to direct the State Department to remove Cuba from the list of State Sponsors of Terrorism immediately. Leaders from the public, religious, and civic sectors worldwide have called for Cuba's removal from the list. Even the President of Colombia has stated that there is no justification for Cuba being on the list.

Former President Donald Trump designated Cuba as a State Sponsor of Terrorism during his final days in office. This designation has compounded the already immense challenges faced by the Cuban people, who have been struggling under the weight of the COVID-19 pandemic, 60 years of U.S. trade embargo, and 243 sanctions.

Those who wish to participate can do so here.

This action follows The International Conference for the Normalization of Relations between the United States and Cuba in New York with the presence of over a hundred organizations in solidarity with the liberation of the island from economic warfare.

CODEPINK has spent years as activists in solidarity with the people of Cuba. The U.S. blockade against Cuba has been going on for over 60 years. We condemn the U.S. hybrid war on Cuba and are working on everything from ending the blockade, to removing the Trump sanctions and uplifting the incredible international solidarity that Cuba shows the rest of the world. Cuba Si, Bloqueo No!

Sorry, of course the U.S. should removed Cuba from its list of terrorists. It should add, instead, the U.S. and Israel (especially the IDF).

CODEPINK is a great organization, but needs to proceed with caution in this case. Did it ever occur to you that if Cuba is free for the United States to access, the US will take over their long lost Havana playground? Do you recall when Obama opened Cuba to travel for Americans (I went there myself), immediately, the Cuban residents in Florida began screaming to “get our property back” that they lost in the revolution? (Obama was a sly dog.) The revolution was the best thing to happen to Cubans because, unlike most revolutions, the leaders (Fidel Castro, Che Guevara, Jose Marti) were many-degreed educated men who planned the result of the revolution: excellent education, with an emphasis on science, and healthcare for all citizens, with no stratified society; i.e., as one Cuban told me, “We’re all the same.” It’s difficult for western countries, with complete social stratification, to comprehend a society where everyone is treated the same, always. If fact, most won’t believe it if you tell them that, what with rationing, each Cuban receives the same number of eggs in thier allotment.

Without being open to the great, exceptional United States, Cuba manages to have all they fought for, simply by their intelligence. I was in Cuba at the same time Rick Steves was, so when I was back in the State, I saw his address to an audience in an auditorium, and he mentioned the same feeling I had in Cuba…the sense of peace, unlike any other country I’ve and he had traveled. Then at the end of his talk, he said, “But, of course, it’s still a police state.” I was furious that he would tack on that lie (in case the government was listening). The U.S. and Israel are police states. Yes, I’d like to see Cuba treated with respect, but can’t bear the thought the U.S. will kill its progress. And it will.
