On May 25, 2021, Congressman Gregory Meeks introduced the Ensuring American Global Leadership and Engagement Act, also known as the EAGLE Act (H.R. 3524), to the House of Representatives. The EAGLE Act would not only commit our tax dollars to wasteful and environmentally damaging military training and anti-China rhetoric, it would also upset established U.S. foreign policy norms such as the One-China Policy.
Now Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi gets to decide when and if the House of Representatives will vote on this imprudent anti-China bill. Speaker Pelosi has publicly affirmed her commitment to stopping anti-Asian violence and bigotry in Congress — this is her chance to keep Trump’s virulent anti-Asian rhetoric out of our laws.
The bill's rhetoric demonizes China, and this scapegoating emboldens racist agitators and endangers Asian and Asian American people. The EAGLE Act's escalation of tensions with China over Taiwan also puts us all at the very real risk of war, which could quickly spiral into catastrophic nuclear warfare capable of destroying all of Taiwan and much of the U.S. and China, as well as our delicate and already strained environment.
The EAGLE Act also allocates over $1 billion of our tax dollars to biased journalism and media that represent the views and interests of the U.S. government over journalistic standards such as accuracy, objectivity, fairness, and impartiality. The EAGLE Act allocates over $1.3 billion dollars over just 5 years to spreading pro-U.S. propaganda in the Asia Pacific region.
Tell Speaker Pelosi that we need American tax dollars and leadership to address our issues at home. Tell Speaker Pelosi to lead by example and not let the House vote on the EAGLE Act while it includes dangerous anti-Asian rhetoric and wasteful military spending!
Nancy Pelosi claims to support the AAPI community and has promised she would use her power to combat violence and bigotry against Asian communities. Now is our chance to hold her to that promise and keep anti-Asian racism and bigotry out of our laws.
Together we can continue to work towards diplomacy with China and against U.S. militarism in the Pacific!
