Moorhead City Council Passes Ceasefire Resolution Initiated by Fargo-Moorhead CODEPINK Chapter
MOORHEAD, MN– Moorhead City Council passed a Ceasefire Resolution tonight joining a long line of cites across the country demanding an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza. The vote for the resolution was tied but was broken in favor of passage by the mayor.
The resolution, initiated by the Fargo-Moorhead CODEPINK chapter, is one of the most progressive resolutions being passed nationwide. Not only does this resolution call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire but it also demands the U.S. federal government to cease all funding and military packages to Israel.
“We are thrilled that the City Council of Moorhead stood with the people and in the face of mass starvation in Gaza to call for a ceasefire. We send our thanks to the city council, and to the community who banded together to make this possible” -Prairie Johnson
Tonight’s ceasefire victory is the result of months of community grassroots organizing. Through educational teach-ins, public comments at city council meetings, and working with the human rights commision; peace activists in Moorhead were able to appeal to the moral clarity of Moorhead city commision members.
The chapter is also working to pass the same resolution in Fargo, North Dakota. The collaborative efforts between the two cities recently resulted in both mayors issuing a joint proclamation that essentially supported the call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire.
