CODEPINK Co-Founder Declares “War is Not Green” as She Disrupts DNC Climate Meeting
"Weapons destroy the planet! Free free Palestine!"
CHICAGO, IL – CODEPINK co-founder Jodie Evans disrupted the Environmental & Climate Crisis Meeting on the third day of the Democratic National Convention, calling attention to the connection between war and the climate crisis. She was dragged out by security.
Evans stood up in front of the stage where Representative Jamie Raskin was speaking and unfurled a banner reading “Free Free Palestine.” “Weapons destroy the planet! Free free Palestine!” she shouted. The crowd then began chanting: “We’re not going back!”
“We sat through a little bit of the climate caucus discussion. Not a mention, not only of weapons and their destruction of the planet, but what’s happening in Gaza–that all of those bombs dropped on Gaza are destroying the planet,” said Evans after the disruption.
War and militarism are not green. The Pentagon is the largest institutional consumer of fossil fuels globally, and US military emissions exceed those of 140 nations. Additionally, Israel’s US-backed military campaign in Gaza is both a genocide and an ecocide. Israeli airstrikes, which have targeted Gaza’s farmlands and water supply, have had a catastrophic impact on the environment.
You can watch the disruption here.
CODEPINK is committed to ending war for the sake of the people and the planet, to cutting the Pentagon budget and investing in our communities, and to transitioning war jobs to green jobs.
