CODEPINK Statement on Ceasefire Proposal Supported By President Biden

"If Biden believes what he is saying then Israel’s refusal to accept the deal should result in an immediate cessation of weapons and military support to Israel."

On Friday, President Biden released a statement expressing his support for a ceasefire deal. After thwarting multiple ceasefire proposals and months of unwavering support for genocide, this proposal is a pathetic attempt to save face. A ceasefire is essential, however Biden waited until Israel had nearly destroyed Gaza before proposing it. Now, the ceasefire proposal he is taunting promotes a return to the intolerable conditions Palestinians endured before October.

Biden continues to erase Palestinian sovereignty as he refers to this deal as “Israel’s Proposal”. Despite this, Israel has rejected it. In fact, this proposal is almost identical to the proposal put forward by Hamas back in February. The very proposal that both the US and Israel rejected. Now, after four months of murder and destruction, Biden is acting as though it is Hamas who is objecting to a ceasefire when they have signaled support while Israel has opposed it.

If Biden believes what he is saying then Israel’s refusal to accept the deal should result in an immediate cessation of weapons and military support to Israel.

Regardless of Biden’s rhetoric that suggests the US has been working tirelessly to stop Palestinian suffering and end the war, the world will never forget the reality. The US has blocked every international effort for a ceasefire, contributed to Palestinian suffering, continuously denied Israel’s war crimes, and has allow protestors speaking out against the genocide on college campuses be brutalized by police.

This ceasefire deal does not give attention to the root causes, no accountability for the perpetrators, no real redress for the victims, no protection for vulnerable Palestinians, and a continuation of the siege, occupation, and apartheid. It also does not address the increased violence, murder, and land theft that Israel is committing in the West Bank.

The only path to true, lasting peace is through justice. Achieving justice requires holding those responsible for the deaths of nearly 40,000 Palestinians accountable and ending all military support for Israel.
