AOC, Rashida Tlaib & Mark Pocan introduced an amendment to the NDAA to block $735 million in weapons to Israel. Tell your Reps to support it!
Every year a little thing called the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) rolls through Congress. Every year it is used to increase the war budget. Sometimes amendments are introduced to make a statement that members of Congress or their constituents are fed up with a specific element of American foreign policy. Yesterday, Representatives Ocasio-Cortez, Tlaib, and Pocan submitted an amendment that would block a massive weapons sale to Israel.
Now, when the main vote for the NDAA comes around in October we won’t be asking members of Congress to vote yes on any bill that doesn’t significantly cut the pentagon budget. However, amendments like these are useful for a couple reasons-
-It gives us a new opportunity to tell our Representatives and Senators that we DO NOT support arming Israel and actively oppose any arms sales to the apartheid state that mercilessly kills Palestinians.
-It keeps new arms sales like the one the amendment mentions in the conversation.
The arms sale the amendment is targeting was one that was approved by the Biden Administration back in May. The sale includes $735 million dollars in bombs and laser guided missile systems. These weapons are the ones regularly used on the people of Gaza. The introduction of this amendment is a great opportunity to make noise about ending weapons sales to Israel.
This push is less about the NDAA and more about continuing to resist arms sales. The more action we take, the more Congress will understand that we don’t want to arm or fund Israeli apartheid.
