This painting pays homage to the "Marron Inconnu," who were brave Haitian slaves who rebelled against their oppressors and fled to the mountains. They lived off the land and formed their own communities, and even though they were pursued by the French colonial powers, they never surrendered. The Core Group, the U.S. and the OAS, which represent a modern form of oppression in Haiti, have been unable to break the spirit of the Haitian people. Overall, this painting is a tribute to the strength and resilience of the Haitian people, as well as a representation of the often-overlooked contributions of black women throughout history.
