Dear friend,
What if Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) titled his memoir How to Get Away with Murder? It might be appropriate, considering we just saw the report confirming that MBS indeed ordered the murder of Jamal Khashoggi. But the Biden Administration has no plans to hold him accountable, so Congress must. Call on your representative to support Ilhan Omar’s bill to sanction MBS!
In October of 2018, Saudi citizen and Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi was brutally murdered inside of the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. The Biden Administration released a report late last week confirming that Crown Prince MBS ordered the murder of Khashoggi. Yet despite this proof, the Biden Administration has no plans to hold MBS accountable for the murder. Representative Ilhan Omar introduced the Mohammed bin Salman Must Be Sanctioned Act (MBS MBS Act) yesterday, and Congress has the opportunity to #SanctionMBS.
At CODEPINK we don’t endorse broad economic sanctions like the ones we see harming the people of Iran and Venezuela. But the U.S. can impose individual sanctions. These sanctions would include things like asset freezes and visa bans. Saudi activists need to be supported in times like these, and it is clear that MBS has a low tolerance for dissent. Call on Congress to #SanctionMBS and stand with human rights defenders in Saudi Arabia!
We already knew the truth before the Biden Administration released this report. And while it is a great step toward transparency, we need to know that these actions aren’t just symbolic. We know career politicians love to feed us platitudes, but we can’t stand for it because it doesn’t actually get anything done. Thank you for continuing to use your voice to make a better world.
