March 29, 2022 – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CODEPINK joins the People's Summit to be held in L.A. in June 2022
In the tradition of each Summit of the Americas since the 2005 Mar Del Plata Summit, trade unionists, activists, grassroots organizations and progressive people of Los Angeles and of the Americas are calling for a People’s Summit on June 8th, 9th and 10th to counter the 9th Summit of the Americas– slated to be held in Los Angeles, CA.
The Biden Administration, alongside Los Angeles Mayor Garcetti and California Governor Gavin Newson will use the 9th Summit of the Americas to showcase Los Angeles as the example of “economic prosperity, security, human rights, and dignity.” However, the history of U.S. financial and military intervention in Latin America, as well as its systemic neglect and oppression of working-class communities of color here in the U.S. has not exemplified these principles.
Manolo De Los Santos, a member of the organizing team of the People’s Summit, highlighted: “The importance of the People’s Summit is that it is giving voice to millions of people in the country and in the continent who are often excluded from mainstream, official spaces and narratives. We want to create a space that encourages debate, discussion, and dialogue between different forces in our society that actually want to transform it for the better.”
Working people across the city of Los Angeles know that our government officials have failed to deal with the deep inequities in our communities – issues that will be undoubtedly underplayed or outright ignored by leaders in this country in the 9th Summit of the Americas.
Join our movement and join our call for a People’s Summit to discuss the real crises facing our communities within the region. We will be hosting three days of workshops, panels, cultural performances and mobilizations, concurrent with the Summit of the Americas to create a space and opportunity to discuss these dire needs of our region.
The People’s Summit will be organized by a coalition of local and national organizations, such as ANSWER Coalition, CODEPINK, California branch of the Poor People’s Campaign, the International Committee of the Democratic Socialists of America, the National Lawyers Guild, and others.
