CODEPINK and Peace Activists Target Nancy Pelosi and Other Faux “Feminists” in Congress

WASHINGTON – On the eve of International Women’s Day, CODEPINK, along with Mothers and Daughters Against Genocide, plan to “sit-in” Nancy Pelosi’s office to expose her faux “feminism.” The group plans to be in Pelosi's office, room L1236, at 10 am ET and then in Eleanor Holmes Norton's office, room R2136, at noon.

The group is targeting Rep. Pelosi because she has the power and position to lead on women’s rights and be a true champion for reproductive justice; however, she instead chooses to support and fund the genocide in Gaza. The group will be there to point out her blatant feminist hypocrisy and her silence and complicity regarding the U.S.-supported genocide in Gaza. The group’s demands for the women of Congress to call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, an end to U.S. funding and military assistance to Israel, and to restore funding the UNRWA for the continuation of humanitarian aid to Gaza.

“The blood is on her hands,” says CODEPINK co-founder Jodie Evans, who is advocating in D.C. this week for a permanent ceasefire and an end to the occupation of Palestine. “It is horrific to walk through these halls of Congress and see women raising the flag of reproductive rights yet refusing to say anything about the devastating reproductive crisis the genocide in Gaza is causing women.”

By refusing to end military and financial aid to Israel, Pelosi and other faux “feminists” have created a devastating reproductive justice nightmare in Palestine:

  • Miscarriages in Palestine have increased by 300%
  • There is little to no access to adequate prenatal and postnatal care, treatment, and medicine for families.
  • 1 in 10 Palestinian women in labor are delayed in reaching hospitals by military checkpoints, which can result in them being forced to give birth in unsafe, undignified, and sometimes fatal conditions
  • Over 94,000 Palestinian women lack access BEFORE Oct. 7; Gaza is home to over a million children without access to proper food, medical services, and freedom of movement.
  • There is a shortage of blood to treat postpartum injuries, and surgeons have performed C-sections with no anesthetic.
  • The Palestinian Family Planning and Protection Association (PFPPA) has worked to ensure the accessibility of sexual and reproductive health care services for Palestinians. Israel destroyed it with an airstrike.

Pelosi is ignoring a majority of Americans who want a ceasefire and, according to the latest poll, do not want U.S. tax dollars and military assistance going to Israel. She is also ignoring her constituency in California that elected her to serve them.

After the sit-in in Pelosi’s office, the group of mostly D.C. residents will visit the office of Eleanor Holmes Norton, who has also refused to listen to most of her constituents who demand D.C. support a ceasefire resolution.
