Recently, CODEPINK has been the subject of ridiculous attempts by a warmongering news outlet to undermine our legitimacy as a peace organization. For the last twenty years, we have been extremely proud of our ability to make power uncomfortable when we are being pushed into wars we do not consent to. We are honoured to do steadfast and honest work with you and our allies in the movement for a more just and sustainable world. These accusations, like the ones levied against social justice organizers in the 1940s by McCarthy’s infamous Committee on Unamerican Activities, are intended to instill fear in people who care about avoiding nuclear war. These Mccarthyesque pundits and editorial boards are going after people and organizations in the United States and around the world that simply want to live in a peaceful world.
Unfortunately, none of this is new to the pro-peace left. Anti-war activists who resisted World War I were thrown into jail and even deported. People who resisted the draft were prosecuted, even public figures like Mohammad Ali who refused to go fight in Vietnam, were used as an example for anyone who dared to stand against the US empire.
The accusations made against us at CODEPINK are that we take marching orders and money from foreign governments. We do neither of those things. We work on behalf of people like you who oppose war.
CODEPINK has learned over the years, when opposing the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya, and today, as we promote negotiations to end the war in Ukraine and try to avoid a war with China, that peacemakers will always be labeled as “unpatriotic” or even traitors. But we will bravely continue to promote peace, no matter how hard those who profit from war try to stop us.
Support peace activists all over the world by signing our letter condeming the new wave of McCarthyism!
As we continue to organize for peace while getting baselessly attacked, you can join over 31,000 individuals who have donated to CODEPINK over the years!
