Iran Deal Supporters to Hold Press Conference on Capitol Hill
When: 11:30am on Tuesday, September 8, 2015
Where: Capitol Visitor Center, SVC 203-02
Washington, DC-- The peace group CODEPINK will join a coalition of activist groups to hold a press conference highlighting the national and global support for the Iran Nuclear Deal. Following the event, CODEPINK and other activists will march to Senator Schumer’s office to protest his negative position on the deal.
Top grassroots leaders, key Members of Congress, and other guests including Sarah Shourd, the journalist and playwright imprisoned for 410 days as a political hostage by the Iranian government, will be among the speakers at the event.
"I think it's a great deal. Not only does it weaken the hardliner position in Iran and ease tension between our two countries, it could lead to cooperation to combat ISIS,” Shourd said. “I also think that it is good for the Americans that are currently detained there. I think it actually gives the Iranian government less incentive to use hostage taking as a tactic."
Participating organizations include NIAC Action, Women’s Action for New Directions, Win Without War, Progressive Democrats of America, Peace Action, Council for a Livable World, CODEPINK, Friends Committee on National Legislation, Just Foreign Policy, and Global Zero. Groups will also be delivering petitions, meeting with Congressional offices, and engaging in other actions in support of the the nuclear agreement on this day.
