Statement On ICJ's Landmark Ruling on Israel's Occupation of Palestine; Illegal Settlements
CODEPINK welcomes the long overdue findings of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding Israel’s occupation of Palestine. The UN’s highest court announced Friday that it found Israel’s settlement policies, exploitation of natural resources, and continued occupation of Palestine to be in violation of international law, ordering reparations for damages as well as an end to Israel’s occupation.
This watershed ruling reveals what international rights groups and resistance movements within and beyond Palestine have been insisting for years: Israel’s occupation & annexation of Palestinian land and its treatment of the land and its people are plainly illegal. This marks a key turning point in the international consensus regarding the occupation. While the United States government and mainstream media have smeared those who have joined in speaking out against these crimes as anti-semitic, terrorist-sympathizing foreign agents, the ICJ has vindicated our calls and demonstrated that Israel’s occupation is indefensible on a legal basis.
CODEPINK will continue to stand in solidarity with Palestine in every forum until its land and people are liberated from Israeli occupation.
