Fargo-Moorhead CODEPINK Responds To Fargo’s City Commission's Failure to Pass Ceasefire Resolution
Fargo-Moorhead CODEPINK is disappointed but not deterred by tonight’s ceasefire resolution vote. The city commission's failure to pass the ceasefire resolution is a rejection of what a majority of people in this country want. While we were hopeful that Fargo city commission members would do the right thing, we understand that some still may lack the political courage this moment demands. The vote failed by lack of a majority, with 2 votes in favor and 2 votes opposed.
We thank Commissioner Strand and Commissioner Preston, who voted in favor of the resolution. We hope they know how much the public appreciates them taking this stance for justice.
Zero Fargo residents spoke against this resolution during the public comment section tonight, and dozens attended in favor of a ceasefire. Members of the commission received over 340 emails from Fargo residents in support of the resolution. Mayor Mahoney and Commissioner Kolpack, who voted no, said that the resolution was out of the scope of the city government even as over 70 cities have passed similar resolutions.
This is not the end of our advocacy for peace. We will continue to engage the public and our elected and appointed officials so that Fargo becomes the beacon of hope for humanity in the midwest we know it can be. We want the City Commission to understand that we are not going away and we will continue to show up for and with our Palestinian neighbors in Fargo, North Dakota.
