Washington, DC- The United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Russia, China and Iran have announced a historic agreement to dramatically restrict Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for the easing of economic sanctions. CODEPINK salutes all parties for their steadfast commitment to finding a diplomatic solution to this conflict and plans to celebrate with a large cake and Iranian sweets in the Dirksen Cafeteria at noon on July 14, 2015.
“We welcome the announcement of a historic deal with Iran that will make our country and the world safer by avoiding another disastrous war of choice in the Middle East,” said CODEPINK co-founder Jodie Evans. “The American people have consistently supported this diplomatic path, and, today, we all celebrate this hard fought diplomatic victory.”
CODEPINK will pass out the cake and Iranian sweets to members of Congress and their staff. “This is a great victory for peace-loving people around the world,” said CODEPINK Director Alli McCracken. “We want to celebrate in Congress, because now it’s up to Congress to approve the deal.”
Over the next two months, Congress will review and likely vote on this deal, and already some hard-liners in Congress are threatening to kill the agreement and a handful of billionaires are funding multimillion-dollar ad campaigns against the deal. These include casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, Home Depot founder Bernard Marcus, hedge fund tycoon Paul Singer and Charles Bronfman of Koor Industries.
“We call on our congressional representatives to ignore the monied interests of people who prefer hostilities over diplomacy, and instead represent the interests and desires of the American people by supporting this deal,” said CODEPINK co-founder Medea Benjamin.
