Dear friend,
It’s bad enough that President Biden and Secretary Blinken are already taking too long to rejoin the Iran Nuclear Deal (JCPOA). Now, 70 Democrats are joining with Republicans to sabotage their efforts. This week, 140 congressional representatives — 70 Republicans and 70 Democrats — sent a letter urging the Biden administration to take a “comprehensive approach” to Iran, rather than a direct revival of the JCPOA. Let’s be clear: a “comprehensive approach” is a non-starter. It is code for continuing Trump’s march toward war with Iran.
The letter, organized by Reps. Anthony Brown (D-MD) and Michael Waltz (R-FL), comes as European allies are trying to broker a compliance-for-compliance phased approach between the U.S. and Iran. Plus, U.S. Envoy to Iran Robert Malley just reiterated that the U.S. is ready to engage in a serious diplomatic process, and a senior State Department official said that “possible U.S. steps with regard to sanctions [relief] can be on the table.” It also comes at a time when the head of the Atomic Energy Association of Iran, Ali Akbar Salehi, said in a recent PBS interview that the ball is in the U.S.’s court and that Iran will return to compliance as soon as the U.S. takes action.
How dare 70 Democrats try to detour the Biden administration from taking a path to peace. Right now, contact the 70 Dems and voice your outrage!
These 70 Democrats, including such lawmakers as Ted Lieu, are crossing their own party. The 2020 Democratic Party platform stated: “We believe the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) remains the best means to verifiably cut off all of Iran’s pathways to a nuclear bomb. The Trump Administration’s unilateral withdrawal from the JCPOA isolated us from our allies and opened the door for Iran to resume its march toward a nuclear weapons capacity that the JCPOA had stopped. That’s why returning to mutual compliance with the agreement is so urgent.” Why do these 70 reps suddenly disagree with their own party’s platform and their own president?
There is an extremely well-funded faction of hawkish former Trump officials, right-wing organizations, and Republican members of Congress who oppose any deal with Iran, regardless of the details. These 70 Democrats, unfortunately, have joined with them. Let’s tell them this is unacceptable.
