WEBINAR IN PROGRESS: JOIN NOW: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85449481333
On Tuesday, October 19, join CODEPINK Congress as we mobilize opposition to the production of new nuclear warheads.
As part of the near $2 trillion nuclear rearmament program, the Department of Energy (DOE) plans to quadruple production of nuclear bomb core triggers for new warheads. This Tuesday, we’ll talk to the plaintiffs in a lawsuit against the DOE who are charging the department with failing to the conduct proper environmental assessment of ramped up production in Los Alamos, New Mexico and Savannah River, South Carolina.
Join us to learn more about this important lawsuit, current efforts to halt production on new warheads for the Ground Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD), and demands for oversight hearings on the risks posed by plutonium transportation and storage. CODEPINK will also report back on meetings held with staffers for Oversight Committee Chair Carolyn Maloney and Environmental Subcommittee Chair Ro Khanna.
Marylia Kelley is Executive Director of the Livermore-based Tri-Valley Communities Against a Radioactive Environment (Tri-Valley CARES), which monitors the activities of the Energy Department’s nuclear weapons complex.
Tom Clements has been the director of Savannah River Site Watch (SRS Watch), a public interest organization in Columbia, South Carolina, since 2014. SRS Watch monitors US Department of Energy management of weapon-usable materials, nuclear weapons production, and clean-up of high-level nuclear waste.
Special Guest: Daniel Ellsberg, Pentagon Papers Whistleblower and Author, Doomsday Machine: Confessions of a Nuclear War Planner. Ellsberg, a former CIA analyst, calls for the elimination of ICBM’s, the land-based missiles in the U.S. nuclear triad.
Following our guest presentations and Q&A, we will call and write members of the House Oversight and Reform Committee to urge them to hold hearings on the dangers inherent in nuclear rearmament and escalation. Tell Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm to do her job & not the bidding of nuclear weapons contractors.
