Sierra Club: When can you meet with the peace movement?

A few weeks ago, CODEPINK delivered a petition to the Sierra Club office in Oakland to call on them to address militarism, one of the largest threats to the planet! We have delivered our petition to the office with lifelong Sierra Club members and have communicated directly with leadership to request a meeting. Sierra Club is one of the largest and most influential environmental organizations in the world — and in order to save the planet, they must address the elephant in the room: war and militarism! Help us secure a meeting with the Sierra Club’s leadership so we can work with them to speak out against war in time for Earth Day!

UPDATE! WE ARE MEETING SOON! SIGN THE PETITION FOR NEXT STEPS!

Loren Blackford, Sierra Club Executive Director:

We, the undersigned, are asking you to meet with representatives from CODEPINK’s War is Not Green (WING) campaign to discuss what it would mean for the Sierra Club to champion an anti-war stance in defense of the planet. You’ve dedicated your life to saving the planet, and we admire you deeply for it.

Our most important goal is to make our movement for the planet as unified and effective as possible. Lifetime Sierra Club members have driven long distances to deliver our petition to your Oakland office, requesting that we begin a conversation. These committed members are gravely concerned about the threat militarism poses to the planet.

Several Sierra Club chapters have endorsed screenings of the film Earth’s Greatest Enemy, which highlights the importance of confronting U.S. militarism in order to save the planet. The film details the environmental impact of U.S. military bases and emissions worldwide, from Jacksonville to Okinawa, and the impact of training exercises on ocean life, among other things. In some of these screenings, CODEPINK has connected with Sierra Club chapters. In our discussions and report-backs, we’ve seen how audiences across the country have been moved by the film and left reevaluating their approach to environmental organizing.

Please meet with representatives from the WING campaign so they can share a little bit more about how they have been working with Sierra Club members and how the anti-war and environmental movements can collaborate going forward. We hope to discuss how the Sierra Club can embrace the fact that war is one of the greatest threats to the planet, or at the very least raise this up as a concern.

Please email [email protected] to set up a meeting with the WING campaign.

Thank you for all that you do,
