Eid Mubarak,
We at CODEPINK would like to express our deepest and sincerest condolences to the friends and family of the over 250 beautiful souls slaughtered in Baghdad on Sunday. We cannot imagine the pain of having to celebrate Eid al-Fitr without these 250 beloved mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, sons and daughters.
We raise our voices for peace because we know that these kinds of heinous crimes do not occur in a vacuum. Radicalism in Iraq has been fueled and fostered by decades of American intervention and violence against civilians. Our hearts go out not only to the victims, but to their families, communities, and the entire population of the beautiful city of Baghdad.
And finally, we would like to note that Ramadan is a holy month meant for reflection and charity. Those who seek to harm innocent people, especially during Ramadan, are not representative of Islam. It is absolutely crucial that we do not allow this tragedy to fuel America's growing problem with Islamophobia. We stand strong with our Muslim friends and neighbors against radicalism, Islamophobia, and all types of hate and violence.
In solidarity,
The CODEPINK team
