Michigan has become a national ground zero in the U.S. war on China, where its economic, academic, and technological importance has been weaponized by politicians and media to manufacture fear about Chinese people and industry. Across party lines, Michigan politicians have used anti-China hysteria for political gain, producing policies that echo historic racial exclusion rather than genuine security protection.
This webinar will expose how the University of Michigan and federal agencies turned routine research and visa issues involving Chinese scholars into national-security scandals, fueling discrimination and shutting down vital scientific collaboration. It will also detail how Chinese-linked industries like the Gotion battery plant were falsely portrayed as espionage threats despite a lack of evidence, even as Michigan’s own economy depends heavily on Chinese trade and supply chains.
We will be joined by Dana Showtyme Burton, a Detroit native who has spent over 25 year living in China. Burton is a political analyst and hip hop artist, known for fostering a generation of influential rappers across China.
