As a member of Congress, we ask you to lead the call for an independent investigation into the murder of Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, 26, who was shot and killed by an Israeli soldier while taking part in a peaceful demonstration against illegal Israeli settlements near the West Bank village of Beita, near the city of Nablus, on Friday, September 6.
We call on you to initiate a sign-on letter to President Biden and to issue an individual statement.
An autopsy confirmed that Aysenur was killed by a sniper bullet to the head. Several witnesses said the sniper, stationed on a nearby rooftop, shot Eygi after she moved into an olive grove and clearly posed no threat to the Israelis.
“A US citizen, Aysenur was peacefully standing for justice when she was killed,” said her family in a statement, describing her as a “fiercely passionate human rights activist”.
Aysenur traveled to the West Bank as part of the International Solidarity Movement (ISM), a group that tries to protect Palestinians from Israeli settler violence.
This past June, Aysenur graduated from the University of Washington, where she was active in a range of activities demonstrating her commitment to social justice, including participating in the Popular University for a Gaza Liberated Zone and demanding that the administration divest from war profiteering companies.
President Biden has asked Israel to investigate, but, as we have seen in other cases, an investigation by the Israeli government is worthless. That is why Aysenur’s family is calling for an independent investigation, stating: “We call on President Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Secretary of State Antony Blinken to order an independent investigation into the unlawful killing of a US citizen and to ensure full accountability for the guilty parties.”
We urge you to echo the family’s call, through both a sign-on letter to President Biden and an individual statement.
Sincerely,
