Our taxes and our spending fuel our government and our economy. There is power in our dollar. From petitions to participating in a general strike, we can use our financial power to shift the priorities of our government away from war and towards developing our communities.
Currently, our tax dollars are going to militarization, death, and destruction. Our pensions are invested in the war machine. Yet none of the details of these investments are public information. Take the first step and join us in demanding a bare minimum of transparency. We demand to know where our city’s pension money is invested!
The total 2025 US military budget was over $1 trillion – that’s over $2.7 billion a day and nearly $2 million dollars every minute. Each tax-paying adult in the US pays approximately $4800 per year on military spending. This does not include money the US pays to support foreign militaries like Israel, “intelligence” operations, and “soft power” operations (i.e. programs designed to manufacture social and cultural unrest).
Alternatively, our tax dollars could be spent to:
- Eradicate homelessness in the United States ($20 billion annually) Eradicate hunger in the United States ($26 billion annually)
- Create 160,000 new clean energy jobs ($12 billion annually)Â
- Guarantee tuition-free education ($70 billion annually)
- Transition to a Medicare for All System ($300 billion annually)
New York City and State pensions invest billions into the war machine through companies like Boeing, BlackRock, and Oracle. The City and State still have not fully disclosed how much of our money is invested in U.S. military contractors through these pension funds.Â
We demand that City government executives disclose how much of our pensions are invested in military contractors and foreign bonds.
