Dear Attorney General Merrick Garland:
Please drop extradition proceedings against journalist and Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, who is being held in London's Belmarsh Prison. Assange's alleged crimes involve publishing documents provided by whistleblower Chelsea Manning that exposed cases of civilian killings, torture, abduction, and disappearances in Iraq and Afghanistan.
If the legal persecution of Assange continues, investigative journalism and press freedom will be the victims, since news organizations publish classified information to serve the public interest. The people of the United States deserved to know about the crimes committed in their name.
