An apology to the people of Iran

These are indeed terrifying times. Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear agreement is reckless, baseless and dangerous. We cannot allow him to take us down the path towards war with Iran.

Join Jane Fonda, Oliver Stone, Danny Glover, Noam Chomsky, Vijay Prashad, Eve Ensler, Mike Farrell, Frances Fisher, Shiva Rose, Matthew Modine, UPPJ, IPS, World Beyond War, Voices for Non Violence and more in reaching out to the Iranian people with an apology for our president’s unscrupulous behavior and a pledge to try to reverse this decision. We will publicize this “Apology to the Iranian People” via social media and publications inside Iran.

Open Letter to the People of Iran from the American People

Dear Friends,

We, the undersigned, apologize for Donald Trump’s reckless, baseless, and dangerous decision to pull out of the Iran nuclear agreement and we pledge to do everything we can to reverse that decision.

We are ashamed that our government has broken an agreement that was already signed not just by the United States and Iran, but also by France, Britain, Germany, Russia and China, and then approved by the entire UN Security Council in a unanimous vote. We are ashamed that our government has broken a deal that was working, a deal with which Iran was complying, a deal  that was making our entire world safer and could have moved our nations closer towards the path of friendship.

Unlike our president, we believe that a deal is a deal. Unlike our president, we want to resolve the conflicts in the Middle East, not escalate them. Unlike our president, we want our nation’s resources to be dedicated to enriching people’s lives, not enriching the weapons makers. Unlike our president, we want to live in peace and harmony with the people of Iran.

We understand that our nation already has a dreadful history of meddling in the internal affairs of your country. The 1953 coup that overthrew your democratically elected government was unconscionable. So was US support for Iraq’s Saddam Hussein when he invaded Iran in 1980, including selling him material for making chemical weapons that were used against you. The 1988 shooting down of an Iranian civilian airliner, killing all 290 passengers and crew, was unconscionable. So, too, are the decades of covert actions to overthrow your government and the decades of sanctions that have brought such needless suffering to ordinary Iranians.

We understand that the US government has no business interfering in your internal affairs or in the Middle East in general. We should not be selling weapons to nations guilty of gross human rights violations or sending our military to fight in faraway lands. With all the flaws in our own society--from massive inequality and racism to a political system corrupted by monetary influences--we should clean up our own house instead of telling others how to govern themselves.

We will do everything in our power to stop Donald Trump from strangling your economy and taking us to war with you. We will ask the UN to sanction the United States for violating the nuclear agreement. We will urge the Europeans, Russians, and Chinese to keep the deal alive and increase their trade relations. And we will work to rid ourselves of this unscrupulous president and replace him with someone who is trustworthy, moral, and committed to diplomacy.

Please accept our hand in friendship. May the peacemakers prevail over those who sow hatred and discord.

Iran please bear with us. This president and many inside of the administration are part of a draconian society. The 2020 elections are just around the corner and we hope to get rid of them. God willing!

I’m so sorry about U.S. “leaders” who do not represent the people they have sworn to serve. Do not allow them to divide us.

One world and I’m happy to share it with you.

Just saw this — We went to Iran last month and saw and heard the effects of Trump’s pullout and the sanctions. Totally counterproductive if it was intended to persuade the people to turn against the clerics!?!

Please stop Donald Trump from forever settling and damaging the political status of the Iranian Nation. Donald Trump and his cabinet is blatantly provoking war with Iran. Donald is a man of many frailties and he is clearly not fit to make prudent decisions for our nation.

I did not sign this as an imposter and just wanted to let you guys know what I personally felt after reading this. I’m honestly speechless and didn’t expect to hear American people saying this and proving that they are well aware about why Iranians do not want America inside the affairs or borders of Iran, fearing that America like usual would just try to make more destruction to Iran and Iranians while posing as an ally and take whatever it pleases amid the chaos. The reason why my country of such glory fell from the most civilized nation to one considered one of the worst places to be born in in present time lies behind what Arabs (through forcing Islam inside my originally irreligious/Zoroastrian country), America (while teaming up with Britain) and naivety of my own people did to it. I appreciate the honesty, fairness and humanity in every single person worldwide who sends these words to my people but unfortunately, it seems as if the destructiveness of such deranged minds such as Trump’s and immoral behind-the-curtain affairs of politicians are stronger than the hope that justice would eventually prevail after all and I’m watching, feeling, hearing and experiencing my people and all living beings within Iran suffering uncompensatable pain more and more every single day with pretty much no visible way out. Most Iranian families are now torn with the members forcibly choosing to leave Iran and live in different countries only to enjoy freedom and very rarely (with falling currency and strict sanctions in all areas) getting to be with each other like any normal families would want to be. Even though I’m holding grudges against my people too for losing extremely valuable things to them that easily, this decades-long punishment is not proportionate or even remotely fair for being naïve and fooled for the idea of a better life. Those from my generation just curse at our luck for being born in today Iran and not the ancient Persia as our childhood and youth is now forever gone while we’re torn between worrying about what goes on inside our country or outside of it and thinking about from which direction we would be targeted and harmed next. I might be holding a lot of anger against the foreign elements who caused all these to my country but I still thank you for at least voicing your sincere regret for all that has happened. Words can sometimes very badly hurt and maybe just like that, they might manage to somewhat alleviate the mental aspect of pain as long as it’s backed by true feelings. I was actually very angry over yet another thing Trump has done recently when I accidentally saw this page and my maddening anger slowly turned into a mild sadness and sheer surprise after reading each line. If only the entire US soil or the world was inhibited by people like you who do put being humane first and try to take steps in making things related to past wrongdoings right … . As how things are now, I cannot see it myself but I surely hope in the future all countries wise up and only interact with each other for trade and amicable and peaceful co-operations and I hope unlike what happened with Hitler, never again a few mindless megalomaniac extremists of any kind manage to push the world into despair, cruelty and suffering and I hope somehow my people find it in themselves to drive these non-orange nightmarish felons out of Iran and rebuild both the great Iran and their own often lost identities as true Persians. Once again, thank you for letting us know about your feelings

Please keep in mind that Trump does not represent the majority of Americans, in fact he represents very few people that have the ability to think.

I remember the Iranian hostage crisis of the mid-seventies; and I say enough is enough, especially given the fact that the U.S. was involved in your country for examples stated above.
