Candlelight Vigil and Community Potluck to Honor Danhao Wang at University of Michigan
ANN ARBOR – A candlelight vigil and community potluck will be held on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., at the University of Michigan's Rackham Building (West Conference Room - 4th floor), 915 E. Washington Street, Ann Arbor, MI 48109, to honor the life of Danhao Wang, a research scientist who passed away on March 20, 2026. The event aims to commemorate Wang's contributions and address concerns regarding the treatment of international scholars in the United States.
Danhao Wang was a beloved UM researcher, friend, and member of the University of Michigan community. He died shortly after being interrogated by federal authorities. More than six months later, serious questions remain about the circumstances of his death. He is one of many Chinese researchers who were unfairly targeted by federal authorities in the past year.
The vigil will feature speakers from the academic and local communities who will reflect on Wang's life, discuss broader issues faced by international researchers, and demand greater transparency and accountability from the University of Michigan administration. Attendees are encouraged to bring flameless candles and flowers as symbols of remembrance, along with a simple dish to share for the potluck.
The event is open to the public, and all are welcome to attend to honor Danhao Wang's memory and engage in meaningful discussions about the experiences of international scholars in the U.S.
