The 2019 Pentagon budget is already $716 billion and now Trump is proposing a nearly five percent increase, bringing the total “national security” (aka military) 2020 budget to a revolting $750 billion, including billions for the U.S. nuclear weapons arsenal and Trump’s border wall. Meanwhile, communities in the U.S. struggle to meet basic human needs and maintain infrastructure.
The American public wants a Green New Deal, a Medicare for All health system, and free college education for our nation’s youth. How can we afford these programs? The answer is simple: Chop the Pentagon budget and put the “savings” into these critical programs that would truly make our nation more secure.

The Trump administration is proposing an increase of almost 5 percent for the Pentagon, bringing its budget to a whopping $750 billion. Yet the agency failed an audit of its spending in 2018. Military spending fuels endless wars and stimulates new conflict, including regime change in foreign states. Corporate weapons manufacturers lobby to ensure inflated military spending that does not benefit society but serves to enrich a small number of corporations.
Trump wants to increase Pentagon spending while slashing funds for basic needs. Over forty percent of U.S. residents are either poor or low-income and cannot afford decent health care, food, or housing. We also face a dire environmental crisis that demands a reorientation of our funding priorities.
As your constituent, I want a Green New Deal, a Medicare for All health system, and free college education for our nation’s youth. How can we afford these programs? The answer is simple: Chop the Pentagon budget and put the “savings” into these critical programs that would truly make our nation more secure. I ask you to reject Trump's Pentagon budget. Please bring our tax dollars home to our communities, where it is sorely needed.
