Angelina Jolie is one of the few actors who has boldly spoken out against the human rights violations Israel has committed and continues to commit in Gaza. In August 2024, Jolie starred in the Netflix-produced film Maria, yet despite her performance, she was absent from the Oscars’ Best Actress nominations. Can her outspoken support for Gaza be a contributing factor in this omission?? Meanwhile, the producer of Maria, Netflix, has been the target of multiple public pressure campaigns for their removal of Palestinian Stories from their streaming platform. Jolie has been attacked for her outspoken support for Gaza — even her own father publicly accused her of being “exposed to propaganda” and “influenced by antisemitic people,” dismissing the genuine empathy she has shown for the people of Gaza. Any feeling person can empathize with the people of Palestine, and Jolie’s actions are not out of the ordinary considering her history of advocating for refugees. Let’s show Angelina that her courage doesn’t go unnoticed and she has a whole movement that supports her advocacy!

We, the undersigned, know the courage it takes to publicly support the people of Gaza in your industry — and we commend and celebrate you for it. We want you to know we are here to support you despite the attacks you have received for your empathy and concern. With this support, we hope to encourage you to take your advocacy further. Netflix, the producers of the film you were brilliant in, Maria, are silencing the stories of the people of Palestine. Silencing them while they are being ethnically cleansed. Netflix has privatized the commons of storytelling and with that power are erasing the opportunity for others to learn about the beautiful people of Palestine. We are asking you to speak with Netflix and ask them to reinstate their “Palestinian Stories” page, as well as the list of at least 19 films by Palestinian filmmakers, about the Palestinian experience, removed from their platform.
Netflix removed the “Palestinian Stories” page and these films back in October of 2024 and have yet to reinstate them despite multiple public pressure campaigns by organizations and individuals. Over 21,000 people signed our petition to reinstate the stories that we hand delivered to both Netflix Hollywood and Los Gatos offices. In addition we emailed and mailed the petition directly to Netflix staff. There has been no response from Netflix. They remain silent on the issue. Many CODEPINK activists have begun canceling their Netflix subscriptions in protest of the erasure of Palestinian stories.
As an activist and advocate for refugee rights, we hope you will use your substantial influence to reach out to the Netflix producers you worked with on Maria and ask them to amplify the voices of Palestinians as they face crimes against humanity. We know the backlash is real, and we are grateful that you have had the courage and commitment to stand with the people of Palestine. Please take your advocacy for Palestine a step further and tell Netflix to reinstate its Palestinian Stories!
