Venezuela has been suffering for years under harsh US sanctions. These sanctions exacerbate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, making it even more difficult for Venezuelans to access lifesaving medicine, medical supplies, and vaccines. I urge you to lift sanctions strangling the economy of Venezuela and other countries suffering extreme hardships during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition, the U.S. should cease its recognition of Juan Guaidó as “interim president," restore relations with the Maduro government and encourage dialogue between all of Venezuela’s political actors.

As a result of US sanctions, Venezuelans struggle without adequate food, electricity, medicine, medical supplies, and COVID vaccines.

US sanctions violate international law under the UN Charter and the Fourth Geneva Convention and constitute another form of warfare in which countries like Venezuela find their assets frozen in banks controlled by the US and its allies.

Venezuela has not threatened the peace and security of the USA, so why are we imposing collective punishment on them that disproportionately harms the most vulnerable: children, the elderly, pregnant women, and the chronically ill?

During a pandemic, the call to lift sanctions becomes an urgent one as the Venezuelan health care system teeters on the verge of collapse. Please end the economic sanctions against Venezuela and other countries struggling during this global pandemic.
