About the book:

Busboys and Poets Books Presents WAR IN UKRAINE: Making Sense of a Senseless Conflict with Medea Benjamin

Join us to hear about the nuances of geopolitics, war, and United States intervention in Ukraine

Russia’s brutal February 2022 invasion of Ukraine has attracted widespread attention and subsequent condemnation across the West. Government and media circles present the conflict as a simple dichotomy between an evil empire and an innocent nation- but it’s a little more complicated than that with historical and geopolitical context. In this concise, accessible and highly informative primer, Medea Benjamin and Nicolas Davies insist the picture is more complicated.

Russia’s aggression was reckless and indefensible- but when contextualized against the West’s reneging on promises to halt eastward expansion of NATO in the wake of the collapse of the Soviet Union, it becomes clear how major a role the West has played in Putin’s actions against Ukraine. From U.S. involvement in the 2014 Ukraine coup to Ukraine’s failure to implement the Minsk peace agreements, an increasingly difficult conflict has now escalated into all-out war between the United States and Russia– the world’s leading nuclear powers. Benjamin and Davies bring together the historical record and current analysis to really look at the events leading up to the conflict while looking at the risks of escalation and opportunities for peace in the coming weeks, months, maybe years. For anyone who wants to get beneath the heavily propagandized media coverage to an understanding of a war with consequences that could prove cataclysmic, reading this timely book will be an urgent necessity.

Medea Benjamin, co-founder of CODEPINK and social justice activist, joins us on the Busboys stage to celebrate her newest release and hopefully answer some of those questions you may have about the Ukrainian conflict. Her book releases officially on November 11th- however, we have special permission to sell copies of the book. Purchase your early copy of WAR IN UKRAINE with Busboys and Poets Books, either during or after the event.

This event is free and open to all. The program begins at 7:00 pm, and will be followed by an audience Q&A. Copies of WAR IN UKRAINE will be available for purchase only the evening of the event. Please note that this event is in person and will NOT be livestreamed.
