National Liberation Day NYC

August 15, known as Liberation Day in Korea, marks the end of the Japanese occupation of Korea in 1945. Liberation Day is bittersweet for the Korean people, because as Japanese colonialism ended, the ongoing US occupation and division of our homeland began.

August 15th also marks the start of the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises, a massive series of US-led war games in Korea that rehearse invasion, regime change, and war crimes.

While the US claims these exercises as “defensive”, the real content of these war drills proves otherwise—during Ulchi Freedom Shield, the US and South Korea will deliberately provoke Pyongyang with simulated invasions of North Korea, which in the past has included drills practicing the use of nuclear weapons against the Korean people.

In response, progressive organizations, trade unions, and political parties in South Korea will mobilize hundreds of thousands of people on August 15th to demand an end to US-ROK military exercises and protest the recent US-ROK tariff deal, which plunders hundreds of billions of dollars from the South Korean economy to pad the pockets of US corporations.

Popular anger against Trump and the US is spreading in South Korea. As our people mobilize, we in the belly of the beast must answer in turn: CODEPINK will join Nodutdol and allied organizations on August 15th as we echo their demands in actions across the country.
