Join us on February 22nd at Ayat in Bay Ridge for the next event in our monthly Pop-Up for Liberation series. This community event combines art, live music, culture, resource sharing, and political education for a unique community-building experience in neighborhoods around NYC. We aim to raise awareness about US/western imperialism, its impact on communities abroad and at home, and how we can build a local peace economy together.
We will have live performances by Leila Hegazy, The Brooklyn Nomads, and a talented, up-and-coming musical collective organized by Kuli.
Building on our previous political education discussion, which involved an overview of US/western imperialism and some of its tools of destabilization and control, we will dive deeper into one of the US's favorite tools, soft power.
Speakers include: Amanda Yee, Krys Cerisier, Sean Blackmon, and a representative from Pal Awda LI. We will also have a teach-in on war tax resistance from Ruth Benn of the War Resisters League.
Proceeds from art and donations will go to Asiyah Women's Center in Bay Ridge, the first women's emergency shelter in NYC that provides culturally competent and trauma informed housing justice and shelter to meet the diverse needs of Muslim, Arab, Middle-Eastern, South Asian, and BIPOC women and children who face domestic violence, eviction, and/or homelessness. They also help asylum seekers and refugees and have helped a lot of refugees from Gaza seeking medical treatment.
