Dear Friends,
Last month, CODEPINK hosted a webinar with six Iranian-Americans, including me, about the COVID-19 crisis in Iran under brutal U.S. sanctions. The discussion was so fantastic that it has been picked up by Link TV. I hope you can join me and the rest of the CODEPINK team to watch it as it premiers tomorrow night, Wednesday, May 6, at 11:00 PM Eastern/8:00 PM Pacific, or if not, you can watch it anytime online on Link TV’s website.
Here's the description:
Six Iranian-Americans discuss the impact of economic sanctions on Iran’s response to the coronavirus, which left the nation without the medical supplies and resources to protect its people, leading to many deaths and suffering. This webinar was sponsored by CODEPINK, the grassroots peace, and social justice movement.
Participants:
- Leila Zand, CODEPINK director of citizen diplomacy with Iran
- Fatemeh Kershavarz, Roshan Institute for Persian Studies
- Salome, MC, Iran's first female rapper
- Sima Shakhsari, professor at the Department of Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies at the University of Minnesota
- Sussan Deyhim, Iranian-American composer, vocalist, performance artist and activist
- Sussan Tahmasebi, Director of FEMENA, supporting feminist movements in the Middle East, North Africa, and Asia
Can’t watch it live tomorrow, Wednesday night at 11 PM ET/8 PM PT or don’t want to wait that long? No problem. It is available on-demand online on Link TV’s website.
Here are a number of actions you can take to advocate for peace with Iran:
Demand ICE release Iranian professor Dr. Asgari, unjustly detained and positive with COVID-19.
Tell your Representative and Senators to call for lifting the sanctions on Iran and for peaceful diplomacy. Senators Chris Murphy, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Reps. Ilhan Omar, Barbara Lee, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and others have already raised their voices and now we need the rest of Congress to join them. Act now!
Call the Treasury Department directly to urge them to suspend Iran sanctions. Just click here to be patched through and use this sample call script:
Hi my name is <<your name>>, I’m from <<your city>>. I am gravely concerned about sanctions on Iran in the middle of the global coronavirus pandemic. I am calling on the Treasury Department to immediately lift sanctions on Iran to allow for humanitarian relief and the trade of medical supplies during this time.
Donate to send immediate medical supplies to Iran.
Towards peace, safety, and health for all,
Leila and the entire CODEPINK team: Ariel, Ann, Asia, Carley, Caty, Cody, Emily, Jodie, Kelsey, Leonardo, Makena, Medea, Michelle, Nancy, Paki, Teri, and Yousef
