Webb describes the accusations as “racial profiling, scientific distortion, and the criminalization of international collaboration.” Jian is accused of conspiring to bring a fungus, Fusarium graminearum, into the U.S. even though, as Webb explains, there’s no evidence she possessed it, and the scientific basis of the charge is “deeply flawed.”
