“$521 billion in base military spending and nearly $64 billion more in overseas contingency funds, including about $5 billion for the current fight in Iraq and Syria” -Military Times
Dear Janet,
One in five children in the US lives under the poverty line - one in three for Black and Latino children. One in 30 children in the US is now homeless. And a majority of Americans (51.4%) will live in poverty at some point before age 65.
Congress is not rushing to hold hearings or pass a $500+ billion social needs funding bill to change those shocking facts. Food insecurity, unemployment and homelessness are now everyday realities for millions of Americans.
But the military-industrial complex is a ravenous beast, and its keepers - lobbyists, former and current government officials, and weapons makers -- ensure that it gets fed first.
Today 4 Congress will vote on a final version of the FY 2015 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). Although this annual bill is presented as “paying our troops”, in fact benefits to the lowest paid troops will be cut. Call your rep and senators now to urge a NO vote: 202-224-3121.
Here’s what the 2015 NDAA would fund: Thousands of US troops and private contractors in Iraq. Bombing Syria and Iraq, and the training of “vetted” Syrian rebel fighters, who may be fighting with ISIL tomorrow. The longest-ever US war in a foreign country, Afghanistan, which President Obama just secretly extended, not ended.
The NDAA funds generals playing golf, military bands marching, and enormous staffs for Pentagon brass. It keeps the lights on at Gitmo’s infamous torture facility. The 2015 NDAA is a lavish holiday gift to Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics, plus NSA contractors CACI, Booz Allen Hamilton, and many other corporations.
It’s YOUR tax money. Call your senators and your representative in the House to say: Vote NO on the NDAA. Call TODAY, and email reports on your calls to [email protected].
Money for jobs and education, not for wars and occupation,
Janet, Lisa and the CODEPINK Team
