We believe that peace, safety, dignity, freedom, and equality for all people is a basic human right. The Downey community is comprised of diverse individuals whose collective cultures, religions, backgrounds, orientations, abilities, and viewpoints join to form a community that prides itself on being welcoming and accepting of people from all walks of life. The ongoing war in Gaza has claimed the lives of many individuals in the region, caused immeasurable suffering to countless persons, and a continued risk of death is imminent if the release of hostages and a ceasefire does not take place.
To support advancement of diversity and equity for people of all ethnicities, national origins, and backgrounds, We condemn hate and xenophobic violence against all persons and affirm that all levels of government must stand united in combating intolerance, xenophobia, discrimination, and hate against those of varying ethnicities, religious beliefs, genders, and backgrounds; We stand behind the principles of peace, unity, respect, understanding, and valuing the sanctity of human life.
We call on the Mayor and City Council members to call on all leaders at the federal level to continue to work cooperatively with the global community to ensure the release of all hostages, seek bilateral de-escalation and ceasefire, ensure timely delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, and pursue peace in the Middle East region to guard and protect the lives, health, and security of innocent civilians.
We call on Mayor Mario Trujillo, Mayor Pro Tem Hector Sosa, Councilmember Claudia Frometa, Councilmember Horacio Ortiz, and Councilmember Dorothy Pemberton to support a ceasefire now!
I am asking you to support adding an Agenda Item calling for a resolution for CEASEFIRE in Gaza. Many other neighboring cities in Southern California and the Los Angeles Metro region have already called for CEASEFIRE/Ending the War in Gaza and initiated action to show their support for humanity. All human lives have the same value, dreams, and rights. Let's ALL stand with Humanity.
