Today’s event was a powerful CODEPINK Congress Capitol Calling Party featuring Jehan Hakim and Hassan El-Tayyab discussing the status of the war on Yemen and next steps for a Yemen War Powers Resolution.
Jehan Hakim provided a thorough summary of how things are looking in Yemen right now, and broke down the U.S.’s role in creating what has been deemed the world's worst humanitarian crisis. She also provided an update on the ceasefire, which began on the first night of Ramadan and is scheduled to take place for two months - with hopes of renewal.
Hassan El-Tayyab walked us through the necessity of why we need a new Yemen War Powers Resolution NOW, even though there is currently a truce. El-Tayyab stressed: “If we make clear to the Saudi-led coalition that there will be no U.S. military support for a resumption of their hostilities, then I think we can make this truce stick and we can turn this into a longer-lasting peace settlement.”
In a humanitarian crisis where 2/3 of civilian deaths are due to airstrikes that are made possible by U.S. support, those of us based in the United States are obligated to help make the Yemen War Powers Resolution a reality. Join us in taking action and tell your Senator to support a new Yemen War Powers Resolution! https://bit.ly/YemenWPRcall
