Since his election in 2018, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has systematically undermined democratic institutions, explicitly permitted the large-scale destruction of the Amazon rainforest by landgrabbers and illegal miners and also has deliberately plunged the country into an unprecedented public health disaster. With close to 500,000 Brazilian victims of the COVID-19 pandemic, record high unemployment, and uncontrolled police violence against Afro-Brazilian communities, the Brazilian people are rising up to say – Chega! (Enough!)
Members of the Brazilian community in the US, together with labor, environmental and human rights defenders, are coming together to support the Brazilian social movements that have called for a national day of action on June 19 to stop Bolsonaro’s politics of death, destruction and genocide against his own people. Here in Washington, we call on the Biden administration to denounce Bolsonaro’s crimes and to condition any US direct foreign assistance on greater respect for fundamental human rights in Brazil and on more effective policies to preserve the Amazon. Fora Bolsonaro! (Stop Bolsonaro!)
Please wear masks and maintain social distancing at this protest!
