Congress is spreading hate on China and hate crimes and violence aimed at Asian Americans is rising to dangerous proportions. We urge Congress to stop driving hate and distrust against China, at this moment in history we need cooperation for the people and the planet.
Dear Members of United States Congress,
The Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party set up earlier this year is threatening the lives of Asian Americans. Nearly 74 percent of Chinese Americans report they’ve faced hate and violence in the past 12 months, according to a Columbia University study. The committee is at the forefront of sabotaging good-faith cooperation between the US and China. Just this summer, it has targeted a partnership program with Tsinghua University and the city of Shenzhen.
The committee has led to amendments to this year’s military spending bill (the 2024 NDAA) which force researchers to disclose their nationality if they're working for programs at universities that receive funding from the Pentagon, as well as close Confucius Institutes, programs that promote Chinese language learning and cultural exchange, and in the process stoking the intense climate of fear that is causing record increases in hate crimes.
Rather than protecting US citizens, the committee is driving a climate of fear and hatred to advance a cold war on China. That war already has casualties - Asian American and Pacific Islanders who have experienced hate and violence, and are afraid to leave their homes. The committee’s relentless persecution of all things related to China has prompted Asian American civil rights groups and even other legislators to speak out and reject xenophobia. We urge you to do the same.
It’s time to stop the hate on the AAPI community, embrace cooperation with China, and end the anti-China committee, for our safety and world peace.
