Women's March: Cut The Pentagon Day #21!

By: Michelle Ellner

Last Saturday my daughter and I went to the Women's March #RallyForAbortionJustice. Lots of people there wanted to take pictures of our sign, they nodded when we walked by. People see through the hypocrisy of our government and understand that the fight for women’s rights and the fight against militarism are intertwined. We know that patriarchy and militarism share the same anti-values: violence; control; authoritarianism; submission; egotistic individualism; contempt for life and exclusion. War not only exposes women to heightened risks of having their human rights violated, but the outrageous $780 billion Pentagon budget takes away money that could be invested in women’s needs.

If politicians are concerned about abortion, they could invest in the things we know for sure would lower abortion rates: free healthcare, free childcare, free family planning services, and paid maternity leave, among others. We hear them whining: “How are we going to pay for all this?” But we have the answer: #CutThePentagon for people, the planet, and peace! Being there with my daughter and surrounded by so many people made me feel hopeful. We're fighting for a future where she can make her choices based on her rights and the availability rather than the lack of options.
