The White House with demands around passing legislation for pathways to citizenship, ending inhumane deportations, and abolishing ICE.
Despite having a permit for the protest, activists were pushed into a corner of the public park, caged in by caution tape on one side and bike rack fencing on others. The irony around the imagery and the title of the rally being “Communities Not Cages” fueled speakers that the demands were urgent.
We were there in solidarity with a clear message. Due to the US’ historical and current involvement in countries whose people seek refuge, we have a responsibility to welcome individuals and families, free all those who are in detention centers, and divest from war. The Pentagon is the largest consumer of fossil fuels that is exacerbating the climate crisis which is set to lead to 50 million climate refugees in the next few years.
