The call to abolish I.C.E. is a national one, but the local harm of the coordination between local police departments and I.C.E. facilities are being fought by grassroots organizers within the communities. Almost one in four residents in Arlington, VA are foreign born with about a quarter of the population across Virginia undocumented.
La ColectiVA and other groups are organizing to further limit the county’s communication with ICE and prevent federal immigration authorities from accessing county property or records, unless it is legally required by a judge.
We joined a car caravan in solidarity to help make the message clear: immigrants are the strength of the Arlington community and elected establishment democrats should be held accountable in serving the people they represent.
The funding that goes into incarceration, surveillance, and deportation should instead go to education, social services, and reparations.
