On Tuesday, September 21, CODEPINK Congress discussed how to mobilize opposition to the proposed $788 billion military budget. Our guests will discuss what this budget funds ($44 billion for nuclear weapons & nuclear rearmament!), amendments to cut the military budget, and opportunities to build a united front against U.S. militarism.
Featured Panelists:
- Congresswoman Barbara Lee was the lone House vote against the invasion of Afghanistan and the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF), used to legitimize drone assassinations. Now Chair of the subcommittee that oversees foreign aid, Lee will also talk to us about efforts to direct US dollars to thwart a looming humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.
- Elizabeth Beavers of Public Citizen is a strategist and advocate for peace, real security, and human rights. Beavers will discuss next steps in pushing back against the record high military budget, the National Defense Authorization Act amendment process and building a coalition to cut the Pentagon in and outside of Congress.
- Carley Towne is CODEPINK’s national co-director and leads the Divest from the War Machine campaign. Towne will share CODEPINK's new "Cut the Pentagon" initiative, and how you can organize support in your own congressional district.
Following our guest presentations and Q & A, we invite you to participate in our Capitol Calling Party to urge our reps to support an NDAA amendment to cut the military budget by 10% and promise to vote against any final bill that doesn't cut the Pentagon budget by at least 10%.

My name is __________________ and I am your constituent in zip code ______________. Please vote for NDAA Amendment 40 that would reduce the current military budget by 10%. If we cut $74 billion from our record-high military budget, we could eradicate hunger and homelessness in the U.S each year. Thank you.
